Load pattern FAQ
This page is devoted to frequently asked questions (FAQ) related to load patterns.
On this page:
How are line loads applied to membranes?
Answer: To apply line loads to deck-type objects, several options are available, including:
- Add these loads as distributed loads to decks, usually as small partition loads for decks without beams underneath.
- Add loads directly to supporting beams.
- Use shell-type objects.
For time-history analysis, can different ground motions be applied to individual supports?
Yes, please see the Displacement time-history record article for details.
Is it possible to apply multiple live-load patterns separately?
Extended Question: I am interested in applying various live-load patterns to determine the governing configuration. When I specify LIVE_LOC1 and LIVE_LOC2 as separate patterns, both of LIVE design type, the combination 1.2*DL+1.6*LIVE_LOC1+1.6*LIVE_LOC2 is automatically generated. How do I apply these patterns separately?
Answer: Load-pattern design types correlate with specific design post-processing methods such that design load combinations are automatically created with the appropriate load factors.
For the configuration described, the separate live-load patterns may be applied by manually creating load combinations as follows:
- 1.2*DL + 1.6*LIVE_LOC1
- 1.2*DL + 1.6*LIVE_LOC2
