The conventional licensing method requires the user to run licensing utilities (specifically echoid.exe or wechoid.exe) on their computer to obtain locking codes for their machine. These locking codes then need to be submitted to CSI licensing department that will generate license files and email them back to the user. The conventional licensing method will be gradually phased out and replaced by web-activated licensing, in which the generation of the license files is handled automatically and there is no need for the users to obtain locking codes and install license files.

The conventional licensing method can be used to issue both standalone licenses (whereby CSI software is be licensed to run on a specific computer only) or network licenses where multiple network-connected computers can share licenses served by a single license server located on the same network.
