Question: We are modeling a steel slab supported by inverted T-beams that are welded to the slab. For design purposes the beam properties should consider an upper flange of the slab. The frame steel design analysis should consider these beam properties. If we assign these properties to the beam, how should we model the steel slab?
Answer: If you model the beam including the top flange, then stiffness/property modifiers could be assigned to the slab shell elements in the beam direction to reduce the stiffness and weight of the slab, such that the top flange is not double counted.
