Live-load reduction factor per NBCC95

Does ETABS consider both formulas when calculating live-load reduction factors?

NBCC95 (4.1.6.9) provides two formulas for live-load (LL) reduction factors, based on floor-surface live load, including:

  • 0.5 + √(20/A), when LL ≥ 4.8kPa
  • 0.3 + √(9.8/B), when LL < 4.8kPa

Answer: ETABS uses the 0.3 + √(9.8/B) formulation to compute live-load reduction factors because occupancy type is not known to the software. Any load defined with the load type Reducible Live (available through Define > Load Case) will automatically be reduced. The load which is not reduced may only be applied with the load type Live.
