Null areas (i.e. area objects with area section assignment "None") are excluded from analysis but can be used to apply area loads of type "Uniform to Frame (Shell)". However, for all other types of area loading, you would need to define an area section with a very small thickness and assign this section to area objects for the purpose of load assignment. This will ensure that the areas will transfer the loads without contributing to the stiffness of the structure. Make sure that you do not assign auto-meshing to these area objects as otherwise, you may run into numerical issues.
