Rigid Culverts

Rigid culverts could be modeled in SAP2000 either by using frame elements (the analysis and design would be performed for a strip with a unit width) or by using shells. For frame model, SAP2000 enables you to directly design reinforcement for the frame section based on the section dimensions and the demand forces for various design codes. For shell model, SAP2000 has generic reinforcement design capabilities.

Relevant existing documentation:

  • Verification Example F (Wall Resisting Hydrostatic Pressure): shows how to apply lateral pressure (soil, hydrostatic) to the culvert wall. Available via "Help > Contents and Index > Example Problems".
  • Concrete Shell Reinforcement Design Technical Note available from "Help > Documentation > Technical Notes".
